I like to talk about the problem of “virtual friends as social junk food”, where virtual friends can be a hyper-optimized social stimulus analogous to how junk food is a hyper-optimized taste stimulus. This problem is obviously already beginning, but has a lot of room to get worse in the future, when there are better inexpensive LLMs, optimized for addiction, with charismatic animated faces, etc. I wrote about this a bit more in §3.4 here → https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/2yLyT6kB7BQvTfEuZ/sharp-left-turn-discourse-an-opinionated-review#3_4_The_arc_of_progress_is_long__but_it_bends_towards_reward_hacking

I love this piece! I think one of the most insidious forms of ads are like “bestie, girl to girl, here’s what they are not telling you” and I’m like dare you hijack the most sacred form of social infrastructure there is to sell me protein lemonade, you are not my friend.
